Kickstart Change--Self-Esteem vs. Confidence

Self-esteem vs. confidence.  I talk about what confidence is in the video "What Is Confidence?" back on the main Kickstart Change membership page (Scroll down a bit on that page and you'll see it).

In a nutshell confidence is:

  • a skill that can be improved,

  • a willingness to try and trust that you'll figure it out--whatever you're struggling with,

  • a willingness to act even when you're afraid or uncertain, and trust that even if you fail, you'll learn from the experience.

No matter where you are on your journey--confidence journey, life journey--your willingness to try unlocks your potential.

Now, let's compare that to self-esteem:

  • It's your overall opinion of yourself.

  • When your self-esteem is healthy, you feel good about yourself.

  • When your self-esteem isn't so healthy, you don't feel so good about yourself.

  • You don't value your opinions and ideas.

  • You think you're not good enough.

  • It's self-judging.

  • With self-esteem, you need to feel good about yourself.  This can hold you back.  You aren't willing to risk feeling bad, so you don't try anything new.

  • With self-esteem, you need to win to feel good, but it's always a competition--one competition after another, after another that you don't appreciate, recognize as enough, and celebrate--so you never really win.

  • It comes from the outside.  If the source of that self-esteem fades, leaves or is taken away, your self-esteem fades, leaves, is taken away.

  • It is boosted by success and diminished by failure.

See the difference between the two?
